- 1 lb lean ground beef or lamb
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking dish with nonstick spray.
- In a skillet over medium heat, sauté chopped onions until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for one more minute before adding ground meat. Brown the meat while breaking it apart.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, and cinnamon. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Layer half of the sweet potato slices in the baking dish, followed by half of the meat mixture. Repeat these layers, finishing with sweet potatoes on top.
- For the béchamel sauce, melt butter in a saucepan, whisk in flour until golden, then gradually add milk while stirring continuously until thickened. Pour over the layered moussaka.
- Bake for approximately 45 minutes until golden brown on top. Let it cool slightly before serving.
